Start with the areas that need coverage

Map entrances, driveways, corridors, counters, loading areas and blind spots before selecting products. The layout determines the number of cameras, suitable camera shape, mounting position and field of view. Home security cameras may focus on doors and outdoor access, while retail and warehouse CCTV systems may require wider coverage, more recorder channels and longer footage retention.

Choose wireless, PoE, wired or 4G

Wireless cameras can simplify placement where Wi-Fi coverage is strong. PoE IP cameras use compatible Ethernet infrastructure for network data and power, making them suitable for many permanent multi-camera installations. A 4G LTE security camera may suit a remote property or temporary site, subject to mobile coverage, data service, power and the specifications of the selected model.

Plan recording and surveillance storage

Depending on the camera system, video may record to an NVR, supported microSD card, local hub or cloud service. Consider how many days of footage you need, the number and resolution of cameras, continuous or event recording, available hard-drive capacity and whether a separate subscription is required.

Confirm camera and NVR compatibility

Check channel count, PoE ports, storage support, power budget, mobile app access and compatibility before combining cameras, recorders and network equipment. Products from different brands may not provide every advanced feature together, including analytics, audio, alerts, firmware control and remote management.

Security camera FAQs

What is the difference between an IP camera and CCTV?

An IP camera sends video over a network. CCTV is the broader term commonly used for a surveillance system containing one or more cameras and recording equipment. Many current CCTV systems use IP cameras and an NVR.

Do wireless security cameras need internet?

Internet access is commonly needed for remote viewing, mobile notifications and cloud services. Some models also support local recording to a compatible microSD card, hub or recorder. Check the exact product.

What is an NVR?

A network video recorder manages and stores footage from compatible IP cameras. Review its camera channel count, PoE ports, supported storage and compatibility with the cameras you plan to connect.

How many security cameras do I need?

The number depends on the building layout, entrances, blind spots, camera field of view and the detail required in each area. Mapping the site before purchase helps avoid gaps and unnecessary cameras.

What does PoE mean on a security camera?

Power over Ethernet allows a compatible camera to receive network data and electrical power through an Ethernet connection connected to a suitable PoE switch, injector or PoE-enabled NVR.

Is a 4K security camera always better?

Higher resolution can provide more detail but may also use more bandwidth and storage. Lighting, lens, positioning, frame rate and low-light performance also affect the final image.

Can I mix cameras and NVRs from different brands?

Some combinations may work, but full support for analytics, audio, alerts and remote management is not guaranteed. Confirm the exact camera and recorder compatibility before purchase.

Do security cameras require a subscription?

Not every system requires one. Some support local storage, while cloud history or advanced detection may depend on a paid service. Review the product and service terms for the selected model.

Product features, included accessories, recording options and subscription requirements vary by model. Review the individual product specifications and manufacturer documentation before purchase.
