Quick answer

Which ATEN KVM or AV solution should I buy?

Start with the number of computers, monitor connection, display count, maximum resolution, USB-peripheral requirements and whether access is local or remote. For professional AV, also confirm signal type, distance, cable category, EDID, control and HDCP requirements.

Two computers at one desk

Choose a cable KVM such as CS22HF for HDMI or CS22DP for DisplayPort.

Four computers with shared USB devices

Choose a desktop KVMP such as CS1794 for HDMI or CS1924 for DisplayPort and USB 3.0 sharing.

Server rack or remote administration

Use an LCD KVM console, multi-port rack KVM or KVM over IP solution sized to the number of servers and remote users.

Boardroom, signage or long-distance AV

Choose an EDID emulator, MST hub, USB extender or HDBaseT extender according to signal type and distance.

ATEN cable KVM and desktop KVMP switches

Use cable KVM for a simple two-computer setup. Choose a desktop KVMP when you need more computer ports, USB peripheral sharing, audio switching or advanced port-selection methods.

Recommended starting points

  • CS22HF-AT: controls two USB HDMI computers from one HDMI monitor, keyboard and mouse; supports up to 1920 × 1080 or 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz.
  • CS22DP-AT: two-port USB DisplayPort cable KVM with remote selector and support for resolutions up to 4096 × 2160 at 60 Hz.
  • CS84U-AT: four-port PS/2-USB VGA desktop KVM for compatible legacy and mixed environments.
  • CS1794-AT-U: four-port HDMI KVMP with shared USB peripherals and audio for Full HD desktop environments.
  • CS1924-AT-U: four-port USB 3.0 DisplayPort KVMP for 4K workstations and faster peripheral sharing.

Confirm monitor resolution and refresh rate, keyboard and mouse compatibility, USB-device power requirements and whether every cable is included.

Secure and enterprise access

ATEN secure KVM, LCD consoles and KVM over IP

ATEN’s enterprise KVM range extends beyond desktop switching to secure isolated workstations, integrated rack consoles and remote server administration.

Secure KVM

CS1144DP is a four-port dual-display DisplayPort secure KVM designed to isolate connected computer channels and peripherals for sensitive environments.

LCD KVM consoles

ATEN integrates an LCD panel, keyboard and touchpad into a 1U sliding rack console. Options vary by screen size, rail design, interface and KVM port count.

KVM over IP

Remote-access products range from single-server appliances to multi-port KN-series platforms for local and remote data-centre administration.

Peripheral and legacy connectivity

ATEN USB sharing, USB-C switching and serial adapters

These products solve a different problem from KVM: they share USB peripherals, switch a USB-C dock between hosts or connect modern computers to legacy RS-232 equipment.

USB and serial options

  • US3344-AT: allows four computers to share four USB 3.2 Gen 1 devices at data rates up to 5 Gbps.
  • US3310-AT: two-port 4K HDMI USB-C KVM dock switch with power pass-through for compatible USB-C systems.
  • UC232A-AT: USB-to-RS-232 adapter for computers that need an external serial port.
  • UC2324-AT: USB-to-four-port RS-232 hub for installations managing several serial devices.

For USB-C video and charging, confirm that the host supports the required DisplayPort Alt Mode and power-delivery profile.

Professional AV connectivity

ATEN EDID, DisplayPort, HDBaseT and USB extension

Professional AV selection depends on more than connector shape. Confirm video resolution, distance, cable quality, HDCP, EDID, control, audio and whether the system must support hot-plugging or displays being powered independently.

Common ATEN AV solutions

  • VC081A-AT: True 4K HDMI EDID emulator that learns and stores display EDID to reduce source-to-display synchronisation problems.
  • VS92DP: two-port DisplayPort MST hub for driving compatible multi-monitor installations from one DisplayPort source.
  • VE901-AT-U: DisplayPort HDBaseT-Lite extender supporting 4K to 40 m and 1080p to 70 m with the specified cable type.
  • UCE260-AT-U: USB 2.0 extender over Cat 5e/6 for remote USB peripherals at distances up to 60 m.

ATEN KVM cables and compatibility

Some ATEN desktop and rack KVM products require model-specific SPHD or interface cables. Check the switch model, computer-side connection, console connection and cable length before ordering.

Example KVM cable

2L-5202U: 1.8 m USB KVM cable using ATEN’s 3-in-1 SPHD connection for compatible switches. A matching connector does not guarantee compatibility, so confirm the supported KVM model.

Frequently asked questions

ATEN KVM and AV FAQs

Direct answers to common ATEN product-selection and compatibility questions.

What is a KVM switch?
A KVM switch lets one keyboard, monitor and mouse control two or more computers. The switch changes which computer receives the console’s input and supplies video to the display.
What is the difference between KVM and KVMP?
KVM shares the keyboard, video and mouse. KVMP adds USB peripheral sharing and often audio, allowing devices such as storage, printers, cameras or headsets to be switched independently on supported models.
Should I buy an HDMI or DisplayPort KVM switch?
Match the KVM to the native ports and required resolution of the computers and monitor. HDMI is common for general office systems, while DisplayPort is frequently preferred for higher-resolution workstations and advanced monitor configurations.
Can a KVM switch support 4K?
Yes, when the exact KVM model, computers, monitor and cables all support the required 4K resolution and refresh rate. “4K” alone is not enough; check the full specification, including 30 Hz versus 60 Hz and one versus two displays.
What is a secure KVM switch?
A secure KVM is designed to isolate connected computer channels and restrict unauthorised peripheral communication. It is used where separate systems or networks handle sensitive information.
What is KVM over IP?
KVM over IP provides remote keyboard, video and mouse access to computers or servers through a network. Supported systems can provide BIOS-level administration, virtual media and multi-user access without relying on the server operating system.
What is an LCD KVM console?
An LCD KVM console integrates a monitor, keyboard and touchpad into a sliding rackmount drawer. It saves rack space and can connect to a separate rack KVM or include multiple KVM ports, depending on the model.
What is an HDMI EDID emulator?
An EDID emulator stores and presents display identification information to the video source. It can prevent resolution changes, blank screens and handshake issues when displays are disconnected, powered off or connected through complex AV equipment.
How far can ATEN HDBaseT extend video?
Distance depends on the extender, resolution and cable type. For example, VE901 supports DisplayPort video up to 70 m at 1080p and up to 40 m at 4K when used with the specified Cat 6a or ATEN cable.
Can I use adapters with an ATEN KVM switch?
Sometimes, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Active versus passive conversion, EDID, HDCP, USB signalling and power can affect operation. A native-interface KVM is usually more reliable than converting every connection.
