Built on 5G RedCap technology, it ensures your network stays online during primary ISP outages using a highly efficient 5G architecture optimized for reliable, always-on backup connectivity.

What is 5G RedCap, and how does it differ from "standard" 5G?

5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) is a modern cellular standard designed to bridge the gap between legacy 4G LTE and high-performance 5G. While "standard" 5G focuses on extreme gigabit speeds, RedCap prioritizes the core strengths of the 5G network: superior reliability and lower latency. By using a more streamlined hardware architecture, it serves as the ideal successor to ULTE for applications like network backup, where maintaining a consistent, "always-on" connection is more critical than reaching absolute peak throughput.

What kind of speeds should I expect from the UniFi 5G Backup?

The UniFi 5G Backup is built for resilient connectivity rather than peak bandwidth. While 5G RedCap is capable of higher theoretical speeds, real-world performance typically ranges between 30–80 Mbps download and 10–20 Mbps upload, depending on your carrier's signal strength and network congestion.

What is the difference between UniFi 5G Backup and UniFi 5G Max?

Core Technology. The UniFi 5G Backup utilizes 5G RedCap for an efficient, streamlined connection, while the UniFi 5G Max uses Full 5G for maximum performance.

How do I power the UniFi 5G Backup?

The power method depends on how the device is connected:

For LAN Connections: Power the device using any PoE switch or a PoE adapter (not included).
For WAN Connections: Power the device using a PoE adapter (not included) before connecting it directly to your gateway's WAN port.

Does UniFi 5G Backup support eSIM?

Yes. The UniFi 5G Backup features Dual SIM Single Standby (DSSS) functionality: (1) External physical nano-SIM + (1) Internal eSIM.

Important Note for T-Mobile Users: T-Mobile Home Internet SIMs are not supported; please use a data-only plan.

Can UniFi 5G Backup work as a standalone device?

No. The UniFi 5G Backup must be adopted by a UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway and cannot function independently.
