Which Ubiquiti UniFi Products Should I Buy?

Quick answer: most UniFi networks need a gateway, one or more WiFi access points and a PoE switch. Add UniFi Protect cameras only when you also have a compatible UniFi console or NVR for local recording. Choose products according to property size, users, internet speed, PoE requirements and future expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a UniFi controller to use UniFi devices?
All UniFi devices can be managed through the free UniFi Network mobile app or web interface. A dedicated controller (Cloud Key or Dream Machine) is recommended for 24/7 management, automatic firmware updates and remote access — but not strictly required for basic setups.
What is the difference between WiFi 6 and WiFi 7?
WiFi 7 (802.11be) adds the 6 GHz band, wider 320 MHz channels and Multi-Link Operation (MLO) for lower latency and higher peak speeds. In practice, WiFi 7 APs deliver roughly 2–3× the throughput of WiFi 6. However, WiFi 6 APs like the U6-Pro and U6-PLUS still provide excellent performance for most homes.
How many cameras can a Dream Machine support?
The UDM-SE supports up to 20 Protect cameras with an internal HDD. The UDM-PRO-MAX supports 20+ cameras. For larger deployments (50+ cameras), a dedicated UniFi NVR is recommended.
Do Ubiquiti cameras require a monthly subscription?
No. UniFi Protect records locally to your Dream Machine, NVR or Cloud Key — there are no monthly cloud fees. AI smart detections (person, vehicle, package, animal) are included for free with all compatible cameras.
Can I mix WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 access points on the same network?
Yes. All UniFi access points are managed through the same controller and clients will seamlessly roam between WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 APs. This makes it easy to upgrade gradually — add WiFi 7 in high-traffic areas and keep WiFi 6 elsewhere.
