> Create plots using a fast CPU and SSD > Transfer plots to a high-capacity HDD > Leave your hard-drive running while Chia harvests
Chia is a cryptocurrency built on blockchain technology. It offers a decentralised transaction system similar to Bitcoin, Ethereum and other coins.
The difference with Chia is how it validates those transactions. Bitcoin requires a high amount of processing power and energy to validate a block of transactions. Chia solves Bitcoin's energy problem by validating transactions using storage space, which requires far less energy and computing resources.
Mining Chia is different from Bitcoin. For a Chia mining system, you'll need:
This means you don't need a graphics card running 24/7, or a super beefy computer.
You don't need a powerful PC to harvest Chia, but a faster computer will speed up the rate at which Chia plots are created.
A higher-end CPU will dramatically speed up plot creation time. You need plots to start harvesting. An Intel Core i9 or Ryzen 9 with lots of cores is a good start, but a slower CPU will work fine too (it will just create plots slower).
While RAM isn't a crucial factor in Chia harvesting, you don't want to have too little. As long as you have over 16 gigabytes, you should be set.
A fast m.2 NVMe SSD with a fast write speed will be the most efficient at creating Chia plots, followed by a SATA SSD. We recommend getting an NVMe SSD if you can.
Chia harvesting requires a lot of storage to hold your plots. The more storage you have, the better.
You have three options when it comes to choosing your Chia storage.
You can use any external USB hard-drive as storage for your Chia plots. They're easy to get started with, but don't hold as much storage and offer less expandability compared to some other options.
Another option is using the internal storage of your PC. You can store plots on your existing hard-drive, or install a new one. The downside is that PCs only have limited SATA and m.2 ports, so you can't install too many.
For serious Chia plotters, we recommend a Direct Attached Storage solution. A DAS system allows you to rapidly expand your storage capacity. It connects multiple hard-drives to your computer through one USB port.
You can also configure the drives in a RAID or JBOD partition, backing up your plots or allowing you to use maximum capacity depending on your needs.
You'll need a heap of storage to hold al your Chia plots. While we recommended a fast NVMe SSD for creating plots, we suggest traditional hard-drives for storing plots.
After you've created plots, no. You just need a lot of storage capacity to hold your plots. But in terms of making the plots on your PC - you'll want a fast SSD.
The more the better. If you're planning on harvesting Chia long-term, you'll quickly fill up your hard-drives with plots.
If you can afford it, high-capacity mechanical hard-drives are the way to go.

Hooray! You've got the hardware out of the way, and now is the time to start harvesting Chia and wait for the green dough to roll into your bank account.
It's relatively simple to get started with Chia mining.
You can find applications for Windows, macOS and Linux from the official Chia website.
A key is an identifier which marks you as the owner of the Chia plots. The app will generate one for you, and you can begin making a plot using your PC and your hard-drive. The smallest plot starts at around 100GB.
After you've generated a plot, you can store it somewhere while it begins harvesting. It's a bit like playing bingo - so the more plots you have, the greater odds you have of generating Chia.
